Qualitative Face Fit Testing
The reason for this test is to prove that the mask you are wearing fits you in the correct way.
If your mask does not fit then it will offer you little or no protection at all. Legally all tight-fitting masks require a face fit test, the test method we use is a simple taste test that can be used to assess disposable and reusable half mask RPE.

Pre Requisites?
There are no pre-requisites, but there are some requirements prior to assessment you must follow:
You MUST NOT have anything to eat, drink (except plain water), smoked, or chewed gum for at least 30 minutes prior to the appointment for your testing.
You MUST be clean shaven, where a candidate is not then the trainer will not be able to complete the test as per the requirements.
You must provide the mask to which you are being fitted to use, you will be asked to advise if this is an individual or pool mask as part of the joining requirements prior to training.
If you wear any head worn PPE, please be advised you will need to provide this at your testing.
Aim
The aim is to provide the individual with the knowledge and understanding of the importance of a correctly fitted face mask and to provide the correct fit test to ensure that work can be performed safely.
Objective
To be aware of how to fit the users mask correctly and safely when returning to work.
Course Content
The trainer will deliver a short PowerPoint presentation on the importance of a properly fitted mask, and how to achieve the correct fit. They will then complete some fit checks of the mask i.e. seal check, visual inspection of the respirator to identify any issues before continuing.
This will then be followed by two practical tests:
The sensitivity test: This is done without your mask on and proves that you can taste the test solution.
The Face Fit Test: This part consists of seven simple 1-minute exercises which must be completed while wearing your mask. The exercises are designed to evaluate the seal of the mask and simulate normal movement.
If an individual does not pass, they will have to wait for a period of 30 minutes before being assessed again, time permitting we will always attempt to retest the same day. Where this is not possible, they can return at an agreed time for a second assessment.
The cost of the fit test includes a maximum of two assessments as this covers the hour maximum per person.
Full Award Assessment
Once the delegate has successfully completed the face fit testing you will receive an ABS certificate of competence.
